Women's Day 2020
Second decade of the 21st century and we are still stuck in the argument of how or whether celebrating this particular day is empowering or ‘just another marketing strategy’.
Struggles the womankind face every day can definitely not be encompassed and mended in just a day. Women’s day is not just another “Hallmark” event, it is not about discounts and offers. It is wrong to emphasize empowering one’s business in the name of a particular day. However, it is NOT wrong to be celebrating the millions of women, whose marches, protests, fights and achievements have granted us today the rights that should have been our basic human right forever?
Empowerment today is shrouded by doubts, overcompensation, skittish remarks and derisive laughter starting from home till abroad; irrespective of gender, race and caste. Women empowerment isn’t a marketing strategy neither is it a plea for help towards the opposite gender. The truth being, humans need each other (a society) to thrive and survive; hence demeaning any other human should be considered an act of atrocity regardless the gender.
This gender-based celebration of a day roots from when women; who had birthed you, brought you up, cooked for you, cleaned for you, earned for you, been the strength of your family in harder and better times without one second thought; weren’t allowed to willfully participate in any societal accords.
‘Twas a dark time.
Today we vote, we work, we own startups, we are able to raise our voices against inequality. But let’s not just make a big deal about today. Let’s ensure that those of us who are empowered leave no stones unturned to empower the ones who haven’t been yet. Let’s just try and be better humans and equality will just be an echo of our empowerment.
